Time for a little update! This movie was banned from being published by the BVG. In my opinion it is because they don't like the theme of the movie. Anyways they claim the went to court, because the filming on their premises wasn't authorized. So the movie was released online only since the makers say, they put too much effort in it, to have it not shown at all. You can say whatever you want about trainwriting, still you can't deny that this and graffiti itself is a vital part of youth culture since the late 70ies. Watch the whole movie on Vimeo and visit they guys from Unlike-U on their website.

Fri, 18 Feb 2011 02:52:00 -0800 A Little Background On The "Amen Break" http://www.lunaticdj.de/a-little-background-on-the-amen-break http://www.lunaticdj.de/a-little-background-on-the-amen-break

I was reading an article on the german magazine's website "Der Spiegel". If you can understand german, read the the article as well, because it features a little insights with Richard Lewis Spencer of The Winstons. Most People who are into HipHop ore have been in the 90ies will recognize the break and of course some of the more prominent songs that used it. If you don't or want to see some more, have a look here. Some of my contacts on facebook find it annoying that the german article takes a lot of the info from the video and turns it into a feature of it's own. I can't really understand that, since to me most of the facts aren't new. It is just the first time somebody put it all together in german. Enjoy the Video!

Fri, 14 Jan 2011 02:17:00 -0800 NAMM 2011 http://www.lunaticdj.de/namm-2011 http://www.lunaticdj.de/namm-2011

Alright, I am not there, but i've gotta to say that what is presented at this years Namm (the worlds biggest music fair, happening twice a year at Anaheim, California) is just awesome!! First and probably best thing for me is: Cubase 6 is out. I got Cubase 4 and wasn't really sure if I wanted to update to version 5, so I didn't and it was exactly the right choice. The update to Cubase 5 was 189 €, while the update to version 6 only is 149 €, hooray! You can look up the features of the new version in the links if you're interested. But now to the BIG things:

Dave-smith-instruments-tempest
(Picture: Dave Smith Instruments)
Many readers might know that I am a big fan of drum machines. So sure I know that it was a guy named Roger Linn who invented those things in 1979. Coming from the classic Linn LM-1 it's successor the LinnDrum was and still is a classic in both HipHop and Techno / House productions. Roger Linn's fabulous designs finally peaked in the design of the Akai MPC 60 which is a classic as well. Now Roger Linn did team up with Dave Smith the engineer behind the legendary Prophet 5 who is now running his own company Dave Smith Instruments who are responsible for the in my opinion best synthesizers built today. The result is called Tempest and is one hell of a drum machine / sequencer / production station. Featuring analog signal path, oscillators sampling capabilities and much more. Check out the video here. I am really amazed, but the price tag is what puts tears in my eyes ($ 1990).

Bildschirmfoto_2011-01-14_um_1
Next Big thing coming up at Namm is Torq 2.0. I've been using Torq for quite a while but in the end switched to Traktor Pro, due to first Torq not putting out updates and being unsatisfied with how they treated their customers. Second was the cheap price tag on Traktor recently and of course their fantastic Kontrol X1 and it's integration with the software! Feature wise Torq looks great now: 4 Decks, 13 built in effects plus Vst integration, a completely redesigned browser (the old one was completely unusable), no hardware bond anymore (feel free to use your soundcard and midi controllers of choice), graphic platters displaying needle position like in serato (for all you beatjugglers out there), a redigned GUI (the old one was totally kindergarten) and much more. One thing though that gives me the creeps: it's a late beta version (free trial) which not really builds up my confidence, since many supposedly stable previous versions already felt like beta releases. Anyway I will totally try it and post some more about it here and in the forums.
One thing I still haven't heard anything about is the new Native Instruments hardware. There was this teaser video, but still no confirmation of what will be new, so i leave the speculations to you. Later today I will post about new Pioneer DJ Controllers. See ya!

Hires_0004_kitara
Now this is how I like it. I can't play any instrument really, but i once learned to play the guitar (and forgot about how to right away). OK I'm about to learn keyboard, but due to it's low stage at the moment that won't count yet! Anyways, this looks like a promising instrument. Check out the video below, to see how it looks and sounds. There actually is plenty more sound to get out of this, but for the first video it looks quite promising. Maybe there will be an Ipad add-on to imitate this some time. For me, it can't wait to see people rocking that thing live on stage and i don't mean i want to hear guitar sounds when it's played... There have been a lot of rumors about it in the last years, but now it is official: Panasonic discontinues the legendary SL 1210. It is known to be the longest produced piece of consumer electronic and made it to the Guiness Book Of Records. As well the legendary deck has a stable place in nearly every nightclub around the world. To me there is little hope, that Panasonic will come up with a new model, so it looks like the times of DJing as we know it are over. Djs with just a laptop (and maybe a controller or two) will take over and if you have the record or not no longer resolves if you can play the song. Hello brave new world!

Many of you might know the Soundburger produced in the 80s by Audiotechnica. Being a record collector i already own a vinyl killer and a Columbia GP-3. Both a really nice, but i always thought the Soundburger is the best thing. First for being small and second for having a line out. The only bad thing is, you won't catch it for less than $ 150 on ebay. Now Crosley copied the design and put out the CR6002A. This one not only features a headphone jack and a line out but as well a usb connection, speakers and an FM transmitter. It feels real good that it still seems to pay off to make new record players in a time where no one would buy another CD-Player, would one?

Tue, 14 Sep 2010 08:56:00 -0700 Music Math - Value Calculator http://www.lunaticdj.de/music-math-value-calculator http://www.lunaticdj.de/music-math-value-calculator

Yay, this is some nice freeware tool I'd like to advise to any musician working on a mac. As an hardware sampler user I've always been sampling at 45 RPM to save precious time in my SP-12 or Akai 950. Those machines have limited sampling memory so, it saved me nearly 50% of my memory. The hassle always was to get the sound in the right pitch again. With the SP-12 it even is nearly impossible because you can only transpose full semitones. Since I store all samples in my computer I was experimenting to keep the pitch on full semitones and speed up the sample, this was a real hassle, because I don't have perfect ears. Music Math does the trick! You just enter the semitones you want to pitch the sample up and the program tells you in percentage how much you must speed up the sample. The full range for an SP-12 which can pitch 8 Semitones in example is 58.74%. But this little freeware thing does a lot more: it calculates SMTP, the time stretching and transpose values for BPM changes, delay times for you bpm, or the hertz for LFOs as well as loop length and diapason for any frequency. If anyone knows a freeware PC program similar to music math, let me know!

Bootlag-label_sidea_zw1
Finally our fist full length EP is out! We worked really hard for that, so be sure to check it out! Have a listen to the track below, all of them will be contained on the vinyl release. Talking about vinyl, this is the only format you will see and there will be no digital release. You can even hear a little SP-12 magic on the title track piano, which originally is a lived played plugin, sampled through the SP and resampled into the PC again. If you like our stuff, please check out our soundcloudmyspace and facebook pages. You can buy the vinyl worldwide from now on. Get it at JunoFatcity (Both UK), deejay Germany, hmv (Japan), i will post links from german sellers as soon as they have it in stores. There will be a double LP of our stuff next month, so watch out!
Actually the integration of soundcloud links doen't really work out here at the moment, so to listen you have to go external, sorry.

Wed, 14 Jul 2010 10:27:03 -0700 FCC Finally Fucked! http://www.lunaticdj.de/fcc-finally-fucked http://www.lunaticdj.de/fcc-finally-fucked

Since yesterday the above song can finally be played on U.S. Television. Prior to this "offensive" lyrics, cuss word and of course nudity was banned in the U.S. If you violated this it was going to get expensive. As an example the broadcast station who was publishing the live show with Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake where she showed one of her tits was fined with $ 1.000.000. As well Howard Stern accumulated fines summing up to $ 2.5 Million for cussing live on air before he turned to broadcasting over satellite for which the FCC isn't responsible. So yesterday the FCC lost a lawsuit concerning cussing and nudity on U.S. broadcasts (TV & Radio). The court stated that the censorship had a paralyzing effect on broadcasting and that freedom of speech is more important than the protection of minors. I'd say Freedom Of Speech: 1, Censorship: 0. What can be done creatively with the words above you can listen to here:

Wed, 23 Jun 2010 03:24:43 -0700 Novation Dicer Controller http://www.lunaticdj.de/novation-dicer-controller http://www.lunaticdj.de/novation-dicer-controller
135
Finally a really innovative controller for DJs. If you know me and followed my setup, you know that i love to keep my controls handy and close to the mixer. I started with two nanopads, one for each deck located left and right to my mixer. Being really unsatisfied with the poor quality i moved to a nanokey and now i have ordered an Akai LPK25. What really kicks me with the Dicer is that you really need no space to set them up. The turntables are there anyway and that's all the space you need. What bugs me though is the price tag. 99 € seems pretty much for two pieces of plastic, rubber and a circuit board. What is good, is that they come in a pair. So if you're thinking about a smart device to control your loops & cuepoints, this might be the thing for you. I still will wait if this might be the kickoff for other companies to produce similar things with a lower price tag...

Yeah yeah, I know it has been a while since my last post. But that is for a reason. I moved to Berlin for the duration of the FIFA Worldcup. I am working for the Skate-Hall Berlin as technician for their Public Viewing of the games. This wouldn't be worth a post if it was just for work, but as you can imagine i have some spare time as well. I moved in here with one of my oldest friends and actually THE guy i started making music with in 1993. So of course i brought my SP-12 with me which arrived from repairs just in time for my departure. Along with that i brought a turntable, my mixer, soundcard and bunch of other stuff. So if I am not working or partying we will be programming on a sample dump tool between the SP-12 and a computer or just programming some beats. The second best thing here is, that this is my first time in berlin i do actually have my own bike and don't have to rely on the BVG

Now we arrived in Glasgow and are hanging out here. I'll write more, when I'm back but for now, guess what? - I'm going to a pub.
