Emu SP-12 Repair Squad

(download)

I´ve written it before and it arrived a week ago: My new SP-12! I used to own one before but had to sell it for a computer in 2001, stupid! So i had to post some pictures of it for you and to show off, of course. Unfortunately i can' t present you any soundfiles since the display broke after 3 days of use. This is not too unexpected since the machine now is nearly 25 years old. This is the primary reason it was a hassle to track down a new display. All the types i have checked on were either not produced anymore or didn't fit, let alone the finding the original optrex display. So first thing i checked on was the cable connections from the motherboard to the display but those weren't the issue, it is the contacts in the display itself. Anyone with a little more inside view knows that this is annoying and sometimes impossible to repair. In the end i found someone in the us who has original "new" old stock optrex displays available. But after laughter comes the tears, this time price wise. The thing cost me 100 bucks. On the other hand i found someone who knows the problem and would repair it, but he was asking for for $ 80 per hour and said he would need one or two to do it. So i´d rather buy a new one and try to repair the old one myself. If anyone likes to see what can be done with this machine and how, you should check out this video on youtube. Alan Braxe explains the SP-1200 and how he programmed his hit Intro. Stay tuned!

The Future Of Games

This video is a presentation by Jesse Schell ex imageneer at disney studios and Carnegie Mellon professor. He holds a lecture on reality layers in games at the DICE 2010. Schell gives an insight on how facebook games got so successful  and why especially you are playing mafia wars or farmville. He draws a vison of the future of gaming which quickly turns out to be a vision of our lives. I really advise everyone to take 28 minutes of your precious time and watch this video, since i can only agree with what G4tv.com says: This is mindblowing, enjoy! via nerdcore

My New In-Ear Monitors

(download)

Yay, I received my first birthday present yesterday. Even though it´s still some time I had to order them early because they are exhibition pieces and therefore were a little cheaper than the regular 149 € / $ 199. Those headphones are Ultimate Ears SuperFi 5eb phones, 2 Way driven and come with an integrated subwoofer. I must say that those phones have the best sound i´ve ever had with my music player, or computer, they even beat my DJ phones (Sennheiser HD 25). After listening to them things for several hours yesterday i as well can say that they are really comfortable to wear. Sure, you´ll be looking a little funny, because they are quite big, but that´s something i can live with. Another cool thing is the replaceable cord which is really nice, because the cord was the thing i always broke with my former Sennheiser In-Ears and also is the weakest point when it comes to headphones. But the cord as well is a little short. It should be just 10-20 cm longer because i think if you´re just a little taller than me, you´ll have problems placing your mp3 player in your pocket. With those in my collection, i finally can say that my sound at home or one the road is as fine as it can get and wish you´d have the same. Sorry for the blurry pictures, i wouldn´t advise you to buy the htc hero, when it comes to the camera.

USB Record Player Study

Bildschirmfoto_2010-02-08_um_1

This is something great! A record player powered by your average USB-Port. Unfortunately it is just a study. Similar things are the Vinylkiller which will not treat your precious records to well or the Sound Burger which would still be my top-choice if I would own one. Anyways i would buy this and prefer it over my GP-3. via Gizmodo and Pyott Design

The History Of The Boombox

This is a very nice documentation about boomboxes, also known as ghettoblasters. I remember having a JVC player in the early ninties which i took every place i went to skateboard. Because of batteries being so expensive, we sometimes skated a particular spot just because it had a 220V power plug somewhere. This video features Fab 5 Freddy and comes up with some interesting conclusions towards the end. Enjoy!

Lego Guns, Yeah!

Bildschirmfoto_2009-12-07_um_0

A friend of mine got a replica of an AK-47 it´s fascinating. But these here are awesome! "Fully" functional models of various guns built from Lego. You can either order kits with all required parts or just the construction manual for various discontinued models. I found this linked from a link on nerdcore, where you can read a story about a guy having a visit from a swat team for assembling the "gun" in his office. My favorite is the Semi Auto, so if want want to give me a nice christmas present...
